Getting lost in a congested city ... anyone for a second round?
Today I went to do a party. We weren’t the main entertainment, but we just did 2 puppet shows. You would think that would take away any hecticness that games, hungry kids, concerned parents, face-painting, face-painting-equipment-raiders, etc. may have brought to the proceedings, right? So everything would go just perfect because the job was so easily put out for us, right? Oh how could you be so wrong!!
First off, we got out the door late. Traffic was … well, Bangkok style, i.e. atrocious, so we stuck all the way down Sukhumvit looking anxiously at our watches every other split second (but that wouldn’t have helped us anyways because our watches are, and have always been, off) so we are chugging down Sukhumvit hoping that everyone else will be as late as we are which will make it OK and what do we do? We miss our turn!! And as any Bangkokian knows, you do not miss your turn on Sukhumvit because you just can’t make a U-turn for miles! You might as well try to turn George Bush into A Democrat! But yes, we did it, and we did try to make a U-turn, but the only place we could make one was a drive-in KFC which fines you if you use their parking lot for a quick U-turn, very smart people. But we are very smart people too and made up the dumb excuse, “Did you see a van full of foreigners come in here?” And of course they look at us as if we come from Mars and say, “No, go back out.” Yes!! Exactly what we wanted, tire squeals follow and we get out of there as quick as we can before anyone fines us like we deserve.
So we do make it to the party eventually and are marginally ok without being late and everything goes smoothly, we set up the puppet show, make sure we have all the puppets and none of them are missing eyes or other appendages and begin the show. And yes, everything continues smoothly until, “CRASH!!” the entire backdrop comes down with a crunch! Oh well, nothing new. We fix it smartly and the rest of the show continues without incident.
The kids were very cute. Most of the parents were American and there was quite a racial mixing-pot present which was nicely interesting. Got to talk to some people and their stories of their Asian experiences! Always an interesting to hear from a foreigner.
I returned home to a schoolbook and pen but the evening was interesting enough to mention here.
Poker it was … and I so clean swept everyone!! I started slow but finished with 15,000 $ (fake money, too bad) with a combined total of 1,000 $ left with everyone else. Had a 5 of a kind which gave me 6,000 $ in one shot, WHOW, and all in all the evening was amusing and everyone was significantly talkative, until I was totally winning, then they were all pensive. Ha.
